Citizen Science and Planetary Science Education through CosmoQuest
Abstract
CosmoQuest is an online citizen science and astronomy education portal that invites users to explore the universe. Since its launch in January 2012, several thousand citizen scientists have participated in mapping and discovery projects involving the Moon, the Kuiper Belt, and asteroid Vesta. We overview some of the first science results and discuss some of the community-building aspects of the program, much of which is powered by the new Google Hangout platform which allows for video sharing and broadcasting to a wide, international audience. We are also piloting lesson plans for teachers that address educational science standards and make it possible to bring the citizen science experience to the classroom.
